What Coat Will I Sew?

1:45 PM

These are the four patterns on my list:

(OOP) Butterick 6775, view B.  This coat is from 2000.  I love a pea coat and I would love to have a long version.  But since the fabric I'm using is black and I already have a black pea coat, this one may fall to the backburner.

Vogue 8933, view C which was released in 2013, is super trendy.  I'm in needed of a long black dress coat.  But should it be in such a trendy style?  I'm really leaning towards view A, the jacket.  Maybe in a great textured fabric with leather sleeves.  That's really the original reason I bought the pattern.

(OOP) Simplicity 4403.  I love all of the views.  I'm not sure of the release date of this pattern, but I know it's over 10 years old.  It was one of the first coat patterns I purchased. The upside to this pattern is that it's a "Threads Collection" pattern.  So you know that means, it has pretty great instructions and all kinds of tidbits.  The downside of this one is the size range that I own (16-24).  I know that a 14 would fit best for a coat and I'm really not wanting to commit to a series of muslins to readjust the sizing.  So this one may fall to back of the stack, once again.

Last, but not least...

Vogue 8346.  This coat was released in 2007 and I'm completely blown away that it is still in print.  I love view B.  But mine would need to be more in the length of view D.  My fabric is a very plush wool.  And instead of buttons, I would use snaps.  And maybe just sew on decorative buttons.  I like the full skirt of the coat.  I think it will work well with dresses, skirts and pants.

My fabric is a black solid coating fabric that's 100% wool from Mood Fabrics.com.  I've had it for about a year and it's been prepped and ready to sew.  I'm going to order lining fabric and buttons today.

  1. OMG, I love coats! I have made a coat every year as a part of my birthday celebration and I'm so excited to know there are others as obsessed as me! I love all of coat patterns but I agree that Vogue is stunning. I have that one too and now I think I know what my 2016 coat will be! Your work is phenomenal. I only wish I was as talented! Love your fabric choice too. Can't wait to see the finished version.
